Blackie and The Rodeo Kings at The Living Room (June 2010)

One way to discover new music is by word of mouth from people whose musical tastes you know.  So when I got a late night email from musician Mary Lamont this past Sunday night telling me to be sure to catch Canadian Bill Bourne when he plays at The Rockwood Music Hall on November 16th, I found Bill’s website and started streaming his songs.  The first notes of the first song there, Deep Dark Woods sold me.  So tonight you’ll find me at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 checking out Bill and his brand of electric blues. I understand he’s playing solo this time around.

There’s some time to kill between the end of Bill’s set at 8pm and the start of the two hour set by Blackie and The Rodeo Kings at The Living Room at 10pm.  But whatever you do during that time, be sure catch BARK (you gotta love that acronym),  a real roots rock outfit made up of Canadians Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson.  BARK has been around for 15 years now.  I first found the band through Kathleen Edwards, who is only one of a number of  musicians who are fans of this band, as must be everyone who saw BARK’s commanding set at The Living Room this past June.

Bill Bourne, The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit) 7pm, No Cover (but a donation for the band strongly encouraged)

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street at Stanton Street (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10pm-midnight, $10
